Yes, I joined the DAR last year on my St.Clair/Sinkler line to
John Sinkler b. 1763 Gilmanton, NH. He was also the son of a very active
Rev. soldier, Col. Richard Sinkler ( descend from John Sinkler/Sinclair of
Exeter). Many of John's brothers and uncles were also involved so there
must be thousands of you descended from at least this family that could
qualify. The Morrison book was very helpful and copies of the pages
connecting later generations are accepted by the DAR for those generations
that would not ever show up on a census.
So you
maybe wonder why anyone would join the DAR? I never realized how much value one
gets from their membership in the form of good returns to the community.
Here are the figures for the year of 1996 that might surprise many of
you:
Much money is raised to promote education such
as: . $1,049,000 was given to schools in AL, SC, GA, NC, MA,
and KY. Essay contests during American History
Month. 84,730 essays were written by students in grades 5-8th grade
with 5,362 schools participating. $75,377 contributed for American Indian
scholarships in Bacone Jr. College Oklahoma and to Chemawa Indian School,
OR. They award yearly National Awards for good citizenship to high
school seniors. There are DAR scholarships in American History, Educaional
(political science, history, government, economics), Nursing, Medical and
Occupational Therapy.
Their Patriotic endeavors come in the form of 7
Americanism Medals awarded to outstanding naturalized adult citizens, 22
medals of Honor presented to native-born adult citizens and over 70,000 DAR
Manuals for Citizenship were given free to new citizens in 1996. They help
coordinate celebrations of any future national observances including
Commemorating of the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. 602
medals were given to recognize worthy, local people for outstanding achievements
in cultural, educational, humanitarian, patriotic and citizenship work in their
communities. 108 Conservation Medals were awarded, and they are responsible for
the annuyal designatioin of Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week with publicity in
all medias. There is DAR service for Veterans at 172 VA Medical Centers
and 9 non-VA hopspitals where volunteers help with with parties, gifts,
programs, canteen books, cash, stamps and mileage and time totaling
$2,604,415. Over 114,700 Flags, including Braille Flags
presented and 16,520 flag Codes and Certificates, and 2,764 Pins
distributed. They present an Annual National Award for outstanding service
in the area of motion picture, radio and TV. 4,062 Good Citizenship Medals
gold and bronze ROTC medals were presented to outstanding high school and
college cadets and provided patriotic material for students.
So I think that
especially the essay contests could be an avenue for your children from each
state to (1)research and learn about their Sinclair ancestors in the Rev. War or
(2) promote the history of Prince Henry to MA and RI (3) just express their own
special feelings about their country.

P.S. There is Junior membership ages 18-35: 1,415 new
Juniors in 1996 Their membership made it possible for $42,000 to go to Helen
Pouch Memorial Fund for activities at Kate Duncan Smith and Tamassee DAR
Schools. Also a CAR (children of American Rev. which provides training in
patriotism and leadership.
And there is a SAR organization for the men.
The DAR is very involved in maintaining
historical sites in each state, and maintain
the DAR Library and Museum in D.C-----Original
