Thanks Gary;,
We tried so hard to get to Ft. Ticonderoga this fall but Nova Scotia was
so interesting that we just didn't have the time. My husband served some
time on the USS Ticonderoga so that interested him. Much information on the
internet on That fort and Ft. George and the French and Indian War.
Interesting how Robert Rogers leader of Roger's Rangers trained a couple of
the British regiments in frontier style warfare. Even got them to give up
their red coats until the British leader suddenly died and was replaced by
another stubborn Gen. from Britain who made them all get back in uniform
and required Rogers and Rangers to be in uniform. That set off a chain of
events. These people were really poor, with hardly any monetary income but
really needed to defend themselves so they were forced to deal with a
counterfeiter from RI to raise the money. They were found out and a trial
commenced. I think everyone knew they were guilty but because of the
situation, heads were turned and they got off free.--This story is from the
Martin Family History by Kathy Martin in ME and I'm sure in other good
regional histories.
John Stark was another of the famous neighbors of the Martins. Rogers
lived in Britain for awhile then returned when the Rev. war broke out and
tried to meet with Gen. Washington who would have nothing to do with him so
Rogers joined the Loyalist side while Stark became one of the heros of the
Battle of Bunker Hill (Breeds Hill) and our Martins and many NH and VTers
were there too. The movie " Northwest Passage" is a really wierd Hollywood
version of just one of Rogers' fantastic exploits during the French and
Indian War.--Spencer Tracy played his part. Quite a stilly movie!
