Two possible connections come to mind ?

First , the Templar survival in Portugal where it continued to flourish , 
similar to the situation in Scotland .

Second , the travel to the Holy Land with the heart of Bruce , which may have 
involved Portugal prior to the death of the Sinclair ( ? William ) in Spain 
in a battle with the Moors .
