Thanks for your note.  My given name leads to a lot of misdirected e-mail - especially at
work, where it also forms part of my e-mail address.

I can confirm from my own transcription of the IGI:

1784 JOHN LAIRD married	MARY SINCLAIR 1784 CANISBAY
They had the following children:
1784 ANDW. LAIRD 
1786 JOHN LAIRD 
1790 WILLIAM LAIRD 
1792 ELIZABETH LAIRD  
1794 JEAN LAIRD 
(All Canisbay)

JOHN LAIRD is possibly the son christened by WILLIAM LAIRD and JANNET SINCLAIR in 1758.
WILLIAM LAIRD married JANET SINCLAIR in 1756.

I can also confirm:

1789 JAMES LAIRD married MARGARET WARSE in Canisbay.

I am still missing my link!

I trust this assists. I have recently come across a database of Orkney Lairds and will let 
you have the reference shortly.

Hello Iain,

Here is a copy of the e-mail that we tried to send to you the other day.
Unfortunately, we had your given name spelled Ian and of course, it 
could not be delivered. It was spelled correctly in a copy of a letter 
that was sent to Joan Rushton from Niven, but at the end, where he gave 
your e-dress, he had it spelled Ian. So.......

Dear Mr.Laird,
 
After reading your letter to "Clan Sinclair U.S.A." about the 'Norwegian 
Connection', I've wanted to contact you about the possibility that your 
LAIRDs and SINCLAIRs from Canisbay could be related to mine.
 
However, it has been too long since I've done any research or even
looked at what information I already have, so it meant finding time to
dig through a pile of papers and making some sense of it all.
 
My paternal grandfather , Eric Sutherland LAIRD, was born in 1867 on the 
family farm  on  the Orkney island of Burray, just north of South
Ronaldsay.
 
He probably came to the U.S. between 1881 and 1891 and settled in
Boston, Mass.
 
My aunt Marion Laird FAY in Boston used to correspond with a cousin
named Ronald MILLER in either Glasgow or Edinburgh. Unfortunately, Aunt
Marion was long gone before I became interested in family history, but
she sent me information she received from her cousin in 1968, containing 
census records from the Bu (Bow) of Burray for 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 , 
and 1891.
 
Armed with that, and with the help of my far more experienced friend at 
the Mormon Family History Center, I've come up with the following:
 
 1. John SINCLAIR, christened 1730. He married
    Elizabeth ROSEY 17 Feb 1749, in Canisbay,Caithness. They had
 2. Mary SINCLAIR, christened 1760,in Canisbay. She married
    John LAIRD 3 Feb 1784, in Canisbay. They had
 3. Andrew LAIRD, christened 12 Dec 1784, in Canisbay. He married
    Jannet LAIRD* 1 Nov 1810, in S. Ronaldsay. They had
 4. James LAIRD, born 14 Apr 1817, in S. Ronaldsay. He married
    Georgina SUTHERLAND 14 Nov 1850, in S. Ronaldsay. They had
 5. Eric Sutherland LAIRD,(my grandfather) born 1867, in S. Ronaldsay.
 
 *  Jannet LAIRD was the daughter of
    James LAIRD, christened 1756. He married
    Margaret WARES,1789, in Canisbay. Margaret was the daughter of
    John WARES and Janet ROSEY
