Thanks John, that verifies what I suspected about Bruce's words.  I have an
11-page reprint pamphlet from the Augustan Society that tells of the Pope
declaring that the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula had the same
religious significance as that of the Holy Land.  This was "known as ''The
Crusade of the West'.  The Knights Templar came quickly to Portugal in 1126
and in 1147 Dom Alfonso Henriques donated all the church property of
Santarem.  This order was founded by Frenchmen for whom it was easier to go
to Portugal and Spain than to the Holy Land."  It goes on to give the
details of the list of all their Masters in the temple of Portugal.  The
details of the Templar castle at Tomar and a map of it is shown.  I plan to
link Laura Zola's trip to this information in the History pages.

In the book "The Darien Disaster" by John Prebble we learn:
the Speedy Return (Capt.. John Baille), sailed from Clyde with Daniel
Mackay, and took Thomas Drummond from Jamaica to the ill fated Scots' colony
of Darien in southern Panama. It was scuttled on the Malabar Coast by the
pirate Bowen.  In May 1701 the Speedy Return and the Content were sent to
trade on the African coast.  Late in 1703 the Speedy Return and Content, now
in the hands of the pirate John Bowen are destroyed off the Malabar Coast.
On Aug. 12th "The Worcester' was seized in Leith Road as a reprisal for the
taking of the "Annandale."  and on April 11th Thomas Green, captain of the
"Worcester", was hanged on Leith Sands with his mate and gunner, having been
found guilty of pirating the Speedy Return.  He was also charged with the
murder of the Drummonds and hung on the Leith sands.
Captain Robert Drummond was commander of the "Caledonia" which he brought
home from New York.  Later he commanded the Speedy Return on the African
voyage with his brother Capt. Tomas Drummand.  Once a grenadier officer of
Argyll's Regiment.  He took part in the Massacre of Glencoe.  He was a
councilor of the first Colony at Darien, then returned to it from New York.
He sailed to Africa as supercargo on his brother's ship.
   There is no connection in this book for Thomas Green and Nova Scotia.  I
suspect that as the Scots saw it, anyone who returned from Darien was marked
as a traitor.  Green had more charges against him concerning the Drummonds
so was hanged as a scape goat.  It is a long and dreadful story concerning
this Colony and the high hopes of a nation where even the poorest persons
contributed their pennies to its development.  Just about everyone had a
stake in it and were highly irate with those who returned.  It is possible
that his symbolic infamy reached to Nova Scotia where they erected that
monument to emphasis his disgrace to even the Scots of Nova Scotia.
