51st Highland Division at St Valéry-en-Caux Remembered
This morning as the BBC introduced the National Ceremony of Remembrance at
the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London, they said it was an appropriate moment
to remember the sacrifice of an entire infantry division, 51st Highland,
Scotland's Finest, at St Valéry-en-Caux. Newsreel accompanied the
narration of their heroism, abandoned in France as the British
Expeditionary Force withdrew at Dunkirk, among them Caithness' own Seaforth
Highlanders.
I think this was the first time their courage and sacrifice has received
national recognition.
