It was this which made the English flee at the Battle of Bannockburn and
not (as some fanciful history books tell us) camp followers coming over the
hill beating their pots and pans.

I am unaware of the 'meaning' of the addition of gold and red underneath a
Sinclair crest other than to suggest that this may have been 'poetic licence'
on the part of a modern artist who was unaware of the symbolic or historical
significance of the black and white checkerboard design.
