Tartan Day

Dear Sir or Madam,

     The first Tartan Day celebration in the Washington, D.C. area was inside 
the U.S. Capitol in 1998.  Today at 10:45 AM I went to a Tartan Day Ceremony 
on the west steps of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.  The American 
Scottish Foundation presented the William Wallace Award to Sir Sean Connery.  
Senator Trent Lott of Mississippi, Senator John Warner of Virginia, Vice 
President Dick Cheney, the British Ambassador to the United States, and 
members of the Scottish Parliament were also present.
    On Saturday, April 7 there will be a big, free Scottish Festival from 
10:00 AM - 5:00 PM on the Mall in Washington, D.C.  It will be on the Mall 
between Third and Fourth Streets.  It is right in back of the National 
Gallery of Art East Wing, the new, modernistic building of the National 
Gallery of Art.
    Baron Henry Sinclair (1275-1336) 7th Baron of Rosslyn and 
great-grandfather of Prince Henry Sinclair was one of the signers of the 
Declaration of Arbroath.  He came in with the Knights Templar (who had blank 
shields and flags with no decorations on them) at the end of the Battle of 
Bannockburn and scared the English Army so that it started to retreat.  I 
recently read an interesting book about Scottish independence.
