> Yes the branch of the Sinclairs with the Crest of a Phoenix in
flames
is from Gloucestershire
in England. Above the crest the words:
renasce piu gloriosa+ appear.
Motto: Fight (which is the same as
that of other branches of the
Sinclair family, notably Hermanston
and Ravenscraig). The Lords
Sinclair also have a phoenix in flames
as their crest or, sometimes, a
swan with wings outstretched.
+ 'arise in glory' is as close as I can get.
The branch with the Maltese Cross (actually the croix pattee) with
stars
is the Sinclairs of Freswick*. The motto via crucis via
lucis - the way
of the cross is the way of the light.
* at present represented by Major General David Boyd Alexander
Sinclair,
the grandson of Admiral Edwyn Alexander Sinclair
Practically every branch of the family has a different crest, a
different
coat-of-arms and a different motto. "Commit yi vark to
God" is the motto
of the Earls of Caithness and not that of any branch
(as far as I am aware)
although it now seems to have been universally (if incorrectly)
adopted.
