Dear Neil
My understanding is that the proportion is the same. It is just easier to 
find male descendants if they haven't had a name change. We women accept 
our husband's surnames, our daughters if they marry, do the same and we can 
get lost. And if you have Sassenach blood from that marriage - oh dear. ( I 
do.) :-}
