The BBC are currently running a weekly documentary "In Search of Scotland" on Scottish History on one of their digital channels, "BBC Knowledge" (2000-2030 hrs BST).  It is supported by a comprehensive website with a very good overview of the main events in our Nation's development and good illustrations at http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/scottishhistory/index.shtml, and even has an "oddities" section with "The Scottish couple roaming the American continent 500 years before Columbus!".  Form your own judgment!
