Cinco de Mayo
Sinclair Community College's morning and evening Spanish class 103 students
researched Cinco de Mayo - La Batalla de Puebla. Their resultant project is
on the web.
The Mexican victory against all probability took place at Puebla, Mexico on
5 May 1862. A ragtag militia of 4,700 poorly equipped and almost untrained
Mexicans met a crack French force of 7,200 and won. They lost the war, but
they prevailed won on 5 May 1862. Briefly, a Mexican Imperial Monarchy
headed by Maximilian of Austria was imposed from 1864 to 1867 on Mexico by
Napoleon III, Emperor of France and the Mexican conservatives "Club de
Notables".
The Mexican resistance of 5 May 1862 had nothing going for it but
commitment.
Margaret Mead wrote,
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change
the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever "
The relationship between commitment and doubt is not antagonistic.
Commitment is real when it's not without doubt but in spite of doubt.
