   Polk had been elected U.S. president the previous year saying
   "fifty-four forty (54°40") or fight!" meaning he intended to take over
   Oregon and annex Texas as ``manifest destiny.''.
   [2]Tomorrow:  March 4. In 1883: Alexander Hamilton Stephens d.. [3]VP
   CSA; U.S. Congressman; and Governor of Georgia; he had a Sinclair
   grandmother.
