   1824: Mexico Republic, Mexico becomes a republic

   1883: William Alexander Smith,
   [2]Fonded the Boys Brigade in Glasgow, but having been born in Thurso.

   1957: Sputnik, USSR launches Sputnik I the 1st artificial earth
   satellite.

   1958: commercial jets, Transatlantic comercial jet passenger service
   began.

   1959: Far Side, USSR Luna 3 sent back 1st photos of Moon's far side.

   1960: repeater satellite, Courier 1B launched; 1st active repeater
   satellite in orbit.

   1969: UN stamps, UN starts issuing postage stamps at Geneva
   headquarters.
